The last gasp Red Sox weren't sitting idly by heading into their three-game series against the White Sox.

First, just before 3 p.m. Friday, the team announced it was designating Rich Hill for assignment in order to open up a roster spot for rookie reliever Luis Guerrero.

Then, an hour later, Red Sox manager Alex Cora offered news that Trevor Story is slated to return to action Saturday, starting at shortstop while facilitating the shifting of Ceddanne Rafaela to second base.

Hill's stint with the Red Sox lasted just four outings, with the 44-year-old lefty running into rough patches after two flawless initial outings. The downturn started when Hill was called on to pitch back-to-back days, coming in for Cooper Criswell following the starter's four perfect innings at Detroit. Hill surrendered a two-run homer to Spencer Torkelson to give the Tigers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Hill's final outing with the Sox came Wednesday against the Mets when he was summoned to come on in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and the Sox trailing by a pair of runs. The southpaw walked the first two batters he faced for two more runs, before getting a fly out.

The Red Sox chose to prioritize potential with Guerrero over patience with Hill, calling up one of Triple-A Worcester's hottest pitchers. The hard-throwing righty, who grew up in Boston, has struck out 13.09 batters per nine innings in 42 outings with the WooSox. In his last 13 1/3 innings he has struck out 23 batters.

The Red Sox will be forced to make another roster move Saturday when they activate Story, who has been impressive during his rehab assignment with Worcester. In 16 plate appearances, the shortstop has has six hits.

"It is very important not only for us, but for him too, just go out there and play," Cora said. "We have a big weekend here. We have to think big and we'll see where we at Monday. There's a good chance that if we take care of business this weekend, we should be a lot closer. We’ll gain ground, we don't lose ground. That's the way we see it. But in the personal side, just for him to be out there, it’s huge. He put the work, he hasn't hesitated. He had a goal. And, it's going to happen. And I'm very happy for him."
