HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden has announced it has a new animal.

Zoo officials have introduced Luna, the new Sumatran tiger. Officials say Sumatran tigers are considered critically endangered due to increasing habitat loss and poaching. Officials say Sumatran tigers are the smallest tigers and are more standoffish. They note that Luna is still adjusting to her new environment.

According to the above video, last year the zoo sent its last Amur tiger to another zoo. Luna was born at a different ACA-accredited zoo and is about two years old. She has both sides of the “new” tiger exhibit—which has combined the old tiger exhibit and the old sun bear exhibit —that are connected by a bridge. Officials note that one of Luna’s favorite spots is on the bridge. Officials note that if people come to see Luna, they should make sure to check both sides of her exhibit as well as the bridge.

Officials explain the reason for this exhibit change is so they can easier move her around and give her more space as well.

A spokesperson for the zoo says, “Our dedicated team has been working tirelessly to ensure Luna’s transition to her new home is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Please stop by and visit Luna; remember to check both sides of her exhibit or even the bridge. She is really great at hiding in her space.”
