EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The 2024 Democratic National Convention is this week, with many from the tri-state area excited to hear Kamala Harris and vice president pick Tim Walz speak.

Evansville city council member Alex Burton is going as a delegate, excited to be in conversations that will shape the upcoming presidential election.

Burton says, “It’s one thing to see a lot of you know the national figureheads from the democratic party on TV on c-span all of that but to be in the same room with them whether we’re talking about majority leader, Schumer minority leader, Jeffries obviously the Obamas, the Clinton’s, everyone will be there and so I’m really looking forward to just embracing all that is to come.”

Burton says he fully supports Harris’ pick Tim Walz, but says he hoped for Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear would be the choice. Adding that Beshear has done a phenomenal job for the commonwealth of Kentucky.

Burton says, “I’m so excited to just see all to continue to see him just blossom and being an awesome governor for the state of Kentucky and supporting the Kamala Walz ticket and so you know though I’m upset that, sad a little sad that he’s not you know the VP pick, I’m excited to know that he’s over just across the water making Kentucky better every day.”

Burton is eager for vice presidential pick, Tim Walz, thinking back to everything the Minnesota governor has done for education.

Burton says, “The fact that students don’t have to worry about paying for their school lunch is a huge win and we know that food access is a real problem, not just here in Evansville, but all across Indiana and across the nation.”

Evansville city councilman Ben Trockman is also serving as a delegate for the state of Indiana.

Trockman says he’s excited to be in an environment that shares the same political identity, including Tim Walz.

Trockman says, “He’s a humble guy we look forward to, I look forward to hearing more from Tim the governor I should say and hearing more about his platform. I think we have two incredible candidates that represent the party well that will represent the country well and I think we’re really going to get to know them even better over the next week.”

The Democratic National Convention is being held in Chicago all week.
