POSEY COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Candidates from local and state races spoke at the Cream the Candidate event in Posey County.

Libertarian candidate Donald Rainwater was in attendance. Rainwater hopes to become Indiana’s next governor.

“I believe that in 2024 what Hoosiers need is better government, not bigger government, not more taxes taken away from them,” says Rainwater.

Rainwater ran in 2020, saying Hoosiers were concerned about how the global Covid-19 pandemic was mishandled.

Now he says Hoosiers are concerned with finances. Rainwater says he is focusing on reforming property tax and getting rid of the state excise tax on gasoline.

“We have a property tax problem in the state of Indiana where many senior citizens who have lived in their homes, all their lives, raised their children made 30, 40 years worth of memories are being forced to sell their homes because even though they paid their mortgage off, they can’t afford to pay their property taxes anymore,” says Rainwater.

Over the past 4 years, Rainwater says he hasn’t held a political office, letting voters know he hasn’t played a part in the state of Indiana’s economy.

“I’m just an everyday Hoosier. I’m not a millionaire. I did not serve as a state representative or as a U.S. senator for six years. I didn’t serve as a state superintendent of public instruction for four years from 2016 to 2020. None of what’s going on in state government today can be directly linked back to anything I’ve done,” says Rainwater.

He’s running against Republican Mike Braun and Democrat Jennifer McCormick.

All three candidates will take part in a debate on October 24.

The election is Tuesday, November 5.
