Indiana AG calls for property tax relief in next legislative session

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita is encouraging lawmakers to work with his office on property tax-related issues in the upcoming legislative session.

According to a statement from Rokita’s office on Monday, Rokita said that Hoosiers from every corner of the state are “calling for property tax relief.”

“They cannot be ignored, especially not by those of us elected to serve them right here in the Statehouse,” Rokita said in the statement. “One of our duties at the attorney generals office is to work with legislators on their legislative priorities to ensure for instance that any resulting language is compliant with our constitution.

“So, as the Organization Day in November and the upcoming session in January quickly approach, my office is looking forward to working with any lawmaker who is attempting to craft legislation to lower property taxes and the overall tax burden on Hoosiers.”

Rokita, a Republican, is currently running for reelection for the attorney general position. Destiny Wells, an attorney and combat veteran, is the state’s Democratic candidate for the position . Both will be on the general election ballot in November.

This comes after the state’s gubernatorial candidates released their respective plans for property tax relief. According to previous reports , U.S. Senator Mike Braun, the state’s Republican gubernatorial candidate, stated that he aims to cap property tax bills at 2% for seniors, low-income residents and families with children under the age of 18.

Under her plan , Jennifer McCormick, the Democratic governor candidate and the state’s former superintendent of public instruction, said that increases in property taxes would be at 10%. Property tax deductions would also increase and expanded for senior citizens and disabled veterans.

Donald Rainwater, the Libertarian candidate for governor, p roposed in his plan a property tax cap of 7% for all Hoosiers for the purchase price of their property, or 1% for a maximum of seven years.

“It’s critical to get this tax relief right, and we are ready to work with legislators to get it right now,” Rokita said at the end of his statement.

According to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office, Hoosiers are able to register to vote for the 2024 General Election through Oct. 7. For more information on how Indiana residents are able to register to vote, click here .
