One person under arrest after shooting near Angel Mounds

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- An arrest has now been made after authorities say that a fight turned into a shots fired incident near the Angel Mounds boat ramp.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office has arrested an Evansville man, identified as Derek Anthony Smith, for several felony charges including attempted murder. Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson, says that the victim called Evansville Central Dispatch advising that he had been shot at by Smith, who had left the scene. The victim then told dispatchers that he was following the suspect and was able to guide Deputies and Evansville Police officers to the suspect’s location. An EPD officer was able to conduct a traffic stop, and took Smith into custody without incident.

The victim told investigators that he was inside his vehicle in the driveway of a friend’s river camp on Lynn Road, when the Smith allegedly drove past him several times before stopping and blocking him into the driveway. The victim says that Smith then allegedly pulled alongside the victim, pulled out a handgun and fired a shot directly at the victim, which appeared to graze them in the arm. Deputies say that the victim was then able to push the gun away and hit the suspect several times. They say that Smith then attempted to stab the man before hitting him with his vehicle while fleeing the scene.

Smith was located a short time later and is now charged with attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness.
