DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) — Knottsville’s blue water tower will soon have a new look. Crews are preparing the 750,000 gallon tank to go from blue to white. The project will cost over half a million dollars.

The East Daviess County Water Association says the Knottsville water tower was painted all blue 13 years ago, and its taken a hard hit due to weather over the years.

Officials say crews will spend part of a 45-day deadline sand blasting the tank to prepare to replace the baby blue with white.

“They’re putting in the containment structure pieces for the containment to go over top of the tank. So, when they start sandblasting everything will not come out and around to the community,” says Kasey Emmick, the General Manger of EDCWA.

Officials say the decision was based on longevity and came after a recent inspection revealed the need.

“We hope to get 25 to 30 years out of the white color. Then, we’re going to have additional lighting on it to make it look really nice for the community…We used to have lighting on it, and we had a bad lightning storm one time that messed the lighting up,” says Emmick.

Emmick says over $500,000 in funding from the Daviess County Fiscal Court’s clean water program will allow them to identify the best methods for protecting the lighting.

“This water tower here is to supply water and also storage in case we have emergencies. It feeds a lot of different parts of Hancock, Daviess and Ohio county,” says Emmick.

The fiscal court program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and has helped replace water mains, update water lines and pump stations and improve water quality across the county.

Experts say they expect to be done with the repainting project before the 45-day window.
