HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — The Warrick County Health Department is warning people of the first detection of West Nile Virus in mosquitos across the county.

In a release, the department says the virus was first identified through pool water testing and asking people to use insect repellent and to wear protective clothing.

    What is West Nile Virus?

The virus is primarily spread by mosquitos. Most people infected will have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms.

Some people might experience symptoms of

    • Headache
    • Fever
    • Body aches
    • Joint pain
    • Diarrhea
    • Vomiting
    • Rash

The Indiana Department of Health say some people can develop more severe symptoms which can include inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, muscle paralysis or death.

Officials say people over the age of 60 or with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of developing a severe case of the virus.

The health department is asking homeowners, landlords and property managers to take steps to control any mosquito populations around their properties.

Some methods of mosquito control include:

    • Placement of screens over windows or doors
    • Accessing property for any items that may hold standing or stagnant water
    • Maintaining grass and landscaping around properties
