OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Owensboro artist and business owner Scott Poynter is hard at work giving back to the Hopkins County community Dawson Springs devastated by the December 2021 tornado.

Scenes like cutting and grinding glass have taken up countless hours inside Poynter’s studio at his business — The Glass Factory — in Owensboro.

Poynter’s putting some 600 pieces of stained glass together on a 15×18 foot mural of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

Separated into nine panels, the mural is set to go inside Resurrection Parish in Dawson Springs. It was damaged in the December 2021 tornado.

Poynter says he is thankful for the task. For 30 years, Poynter has worked on 1,500 pieces for people to enjoy and appreciate. He says this next one will be one that’s extra special to him.

“It’s sad to see the members lose their — basically — their second home being their church,” Poynter says. “I feel very fortunate that I was asked to do this.”

Poynter designed the piece after consulting with church members.

“It has Christ in the center. Two angels on the lower area of his left and right lef which all these are actually going to be painted,” Poynter explains. “They’re going to be actually brilliant. They’re going to be beautiful along with the tomb.”

Specialists in Ohio will paint Jesus, the angels and the tomb. Poynter will then put everything into place — the sodering of glass together, the glazing and the polishing. It’s all in anticipation for installation which Poynter will do too.

“Once the ninth panel is finished, polished, cleaned and ready to install, we’ll set a day for installation, and it’s a big day,” Poynter says.

An installation date isn’t set yet however. There’s plenty of moving parts between Poynter, the company in Ohio and a couple other key players.

“When you have a love for something like this, you always want to put out your best,” Poynter says.

What’s certain is a work of work is coming to Dawson Springs for all to admire — like Poynter’s other works across his career.

“I want that ‘wow’ factor from them. I want them to be happy with it for the next 200 years. As long as the church is there.”
