HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- An employee of a pumping company says that they found a handgun while working on a sewer Thursday afternoon.

Law enforcement reacts to nationwide school threats

Evansville Police say that it happened around 4:00 p.m. in the 1300 block of East Gum Street near College Highway. The employee called police and told them that the gun was sucked from the sewer drain in the middle of the road.

Evansville Police did a background search on the gun and determined that it was not stolen. It was then placed into evidence at EPD Headquarters.

Jane Hackert has lived on College Highway for 37 years. She hasn’t seen anything like this before on her street.

“A police car drives up and…wonder what that’s all about? And policeman got out and start talking to the worker. Then all of a sudden I saw the worker hand him a gun, and he put it in the plastic bag and took it back to his car,” Hackert says.

EPD urges safety following the event.

“Parents: please take the time to talk to your children and tell them if they ever see a firearm to not touch it, to tell an adult and to call 911,” says EPD Sergeant Trudy Day.
