EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — The Evansville Fire Department is continuing their investigation on the massive Division Street fire closed off several streets in the downtown area and sent three firefighters to the hospital.

In a release from EFD, they say the fire at Pike’s Mattress “quickly vented through the roof” when they arrived and three firefighters suffered heat injuries. Two have since been released and one was admitted for overnight observation.

It is said firefighters remained on scene overnight and will continue to be on scene Sunday along with fire investigators and the Indiana State Fire Marshal.

The Evansville/Vanderburgh County Emergency Management Agency took to Facebook to provide an update on the fire. They say “we are sad that Evansville lost another historical structure, but we are very thankful that we did not have any serious injuries.”

Officials say EFD is still on the scene Sunday searching for “extinguishing hotspots” and Division Street may be reopened once the scene has been determined safe and secure.

Here are the current road closures around the area which are expected to open once the scene has been deemed safe:

    • Main and Division (Westbound)
    • Baker and Indiana (Southbound)
    • Garfield and Indiana (Southbound)
    • Read and Indiana (Southbound)
    • Mary and Division (South and Northbound)
    • Harriet and Division (Southbound)
    • Mary exit from the Lloyd onto Division

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined at this time.

    This is a developing story.

that's 3 now in what about 5 years. it's amazing these all get passed off as accidents. and they are all historical buildings. think about that. building has been there for over a hundred years and never caught fire. pretty sketchy
