HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Officials have issued a Boil Water Advisory in an Ohio County Water District service area.

Officials explain, “Due to the number of customers, it is prohibitive for our crews to visit these customers door to door [to place] boil water advisory doorknob hangers. This boil water advisory affects approximately 996 customers who reside along Hwy 62 West in the McHenry, Echols and Rockport areas.”

Water officials say distribution crews are making emergency repairs to an 8-inch line that ruptured near Taylor Mine Road Monday morning. The water district has had widespread reports of some customers having low pressure that this 8-inch line feeds. Therefore, a boil water advisory is issued out of precaution for customers in the areas of Highway 62 West, including McHenry, Echols and Rockport.

A spokesperson explains, “When we experience pressure drops below 20 psi, our system becomes vulnerable for bacteria from groundwater or dirt to seep into the pipe and affect the water supply. This is the reason we issue a boil water advisory in the event of a water main break.”

Officials say as a precautionary measure, all water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil for three minutes. This advisory has been issued out of an abundance of caution and affected customers will be notified when it is lifted.
