OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Authorities identify the man killed Sunday in a shooting at the Knights of Columbus Hall as 21-year-old Nelson Castillo. Deputies say the shooting has been ruled a homicide.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s office says a fight broke out, and a security guard fired a weapon after noticing a man had a gun.

What was scheduled to take place at the hall was a quinceañera. That is an occasion marking a young woman’s 15th birthday; while the celebration of another year of life was taking place inside the K of C hall, another was lost outside.

Law enforcement says several others lives were put at risk in this parking lot.

“Witnesses, along with security, have provided statements to us that ‘the person with the handgun was threatening people with it and that it was being pointed in a direction’. At some point, one of the security officers did discharged his weapon…striking the subject,” says Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman.

DCSO was called to a disturbance at the hall just after midnight on Sunday. When deputies arrived they found what they describe as a chaotic scene, and one man on the ground with a gun wound to the chest. That person turned out to be Nelson Castillo. Castillo later died at the hospital.

Deputies say a disagreement inside the hall led to a fight involving several people. Those people were escorted from the hall, but the fight continued outside.

Even though the party was celebrating a girl’s 15th birthday, officials say there was a lot of alcohol present.

“Detectives do have multiple video angles of the shooting that took place that we’re sending for a forensic analysis. There’s a few language barriers that have come up. So, we’re working with interpreters to get some of those interviews finished. Hopefully, we’ll have some answers here for the public soon,” says Sheriff Youngman.

Investigators have not said what may have started the fight. The security guard who detectives say fired the fatal shot has not been charged, and none of the weapons allegedly used in the incident were reported stolen.

“They are going to be working with that information, adding that to their case file, and seeing where that takes us next,” says Sheriff Youngman.
