VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Families wanting to say “goodbye” to a deceased loved one will soon have another resource at Alexander Memorial Park.

The park has a long tradition with mausoleums. It built some of the first mausoleums in Evansville in the 1960s.

Now — nooked along the windy roads of the burial grounds — Alexander Memorial Park is finishing up its Legacy Mausoleum, the 15th such facility at the park.

Within the next 30 days, the new mausoleum will likely be ready for people to commemorate their deceased loved ones. It will have space for 500 caskets. That number doesn’t include the 150 additional spaces for cremations.

It’s a million-dollar project which comes just in time.

David Hatchett is the park’s general manager. he says there is only two mausoleum spaces left.

“We have a great need for this building and excited to have it completed and available for the public,” Hatchett says.

Hatchett believes interment is becoming more common. He says families worry about grass and other obstacles near traditional burial plots.

“With mausoleum, you don’t have the worry of maintaining and up keeping a marker or monument,” Hatchett says. “It’s just easy to get to and from on the sidewalks to be able to visit a loved one.”

Soon celebrating those priceless moments can be done at this mausoleum. Either outside or at the chapel next door.

“It has an overhang where families can have a service outside,” Hatchett says. “Or, if the weather’s inclement, there’s a chapel right next to it that’s connected where we can easily move indoors.”
