MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (WEHT) – Dispatch has confirmed one person has been injured as the result of a gas line rupture on Tile Factory Road near Mt. Vernon junior high and high school.

Officials say a worker contracted with CenterPoint was working at the scene and hit an 8 inch pipeline at approximately 12:57 p.m. on Wednesday. One person was transported to a hospital with a minor injury.

Officials with CenterPoint Energy says they are aware of the incident and have safely turned off natural gas to access the situation. They say this incident also resulted in temporary electricity loss for approximately 1,250 customers which have since been restored.

Crews are currently at the scene. Neighboring businesses were impacted after officials shut down the gas line following the rupture. One house was also reportedly evacuated.

Officials with the school announced they will be dismissing students as soon as possible, and after school practices will be relocated. All events on campus have been canceled.

The Mt. Vernon Parks and Recreation Department near the high school announced all youth sporting events have been canceled for the evening such as practices for flag football, cheer, tennis and volleyball. They say youth soccer practices and games are still on as scheduled.

    This is a developing story.
