HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) — Two contractors are accused of home improvement fraud in Vanderburgh County.

The owners of Keys Contracting were arrested after deputies say they exploited homeowners with storm damage.

Deputies say several residents hired Jacob and Brooklyn Key to repair damage caused by fallen trees, totaling more than $178,000.

Deputies say the quality of repairs was inadequate, and in one instance, violated the Indiana building code.

Jacob and Brooklyn Key were each released from jail on a $2,500 bond.

The sheriff’s office says each victim also filed civil suits against Keys Contracting.

According to court documents, one couple hired Keys Contracting after their home was damaged during storms in April.

As work was being done, court documents show the homeowners became concerned with Keys Contracting’s ability to perform the work and decided to go their separate ways.

The lawsuit claims the homeowners agreed to pay for the work that was finished, but Keys Contracting continued to send additional invoices to the insurance company.

The lawsuit also claims that in September, the Vanderburgh County Building Commission
inspected the home and found several issues with the work performed by Keys
Contracting. Documents claim the homeowners have paid and received estimates for $79,338.39 to fix Keys Contracting’s defective work.

Sheriff Noah Robinson stated, “The Keys exploited homeowners in vulnerable situations, preying on their urgent need for assistance. My Office is committed to taking a strong stance against those who break the law to profit from the misfortunes of others.”
