HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – The Webster County Board of Education will be getting an almost $1 million grant for distance learning.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, Webster County will use $998,316 to equip two hub/end-user sites and five end-user sites throughout the county with video conferencing equipment.

Officials state instructors within the county school system plus field experts and authors will be able to provide learning opportunities through virtual tours, viewing live cams, virtual college tours and virtual meetings with admissions staff and business leaders.

Officials say 6,513 students will benefit.

This grant is part of a larger project benefitting rural Kentucky to the amount of $5.5 million through the USDA Rural Utilities Service’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program.

On a Commonwealth wide level, Governor Andy Beshear announced that up to $1.4 billion in federal funds will be distributed across Kentucky to increase access to clean energy, education and health care in addition to supporting economic growth in rural communities.
