WEIRTON, W.Va. (WTRF) — The American Disability Act was signed almost 34 years ago. To commemorate this achievement, Weirton is hosting a week-long Disability Independence Celebration.

Disabilities, both physical and mental, present themselves in many ways: visual or auditory impairments, processing and sensory disorders, and wheelchair or mobile aid users are just a few examples.

Activities throughout the week aim to highlight the importance of inclusivity through art, literature, and sports.

“We’re collaborating with our arts council and the Mary H. Weir Library to have an art exhibition and explanation of different resources and books available for those with disabilities.”

Rachel Keeney, executive director of the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau

“So, it’s important that we can get the community to recognize this after 34 years, what’s going to be the future here – that everyone that’s going to be included and create the new future for this city as well as the Ohio Valley.”

Rick Rekowski, director of the Mary H. Weir Public Library

Activities will take place on July 22nd from 3-5 pm, July 23rd and 24th at 5 pm, and July 26th from 4-6 pm.
