WEIRTON, W.Va. (WTRF) — If you take the transit bus in Weirton, chances are you’ve noticed in where it goes around town.

The system has a new owner, and it plans on switching more than just the routes.

In January, the Weirton Transit Corporation officially became a new department of the city.

But they say it’s not just a change of hands.
They’re streamlining the process to make it easier to catch a bus, no matter where you may be.

According to Director of Transit Kevin Davis, the federal government suggested adding more stops to the route.

Previously, the buses had gone to fewer stops that had higher demand.

Riders at places like Wyles Terrace and the Heathermoor Apartments no longer have to call for a bus: it’s now part of the revamped route.

“For example, on our regular route bus, we’re going into Chestnut Manor, which we never did before. So now they don’t have to call for demand. They have a schedule. They can catch the bus ride to Wal-Mart, Kroger, Shop and Save, wherever they need to go.”

Kevin Davis, Director of Transit, City of Weirton

Davis says the system will remain taxpayer funded, but will run more efficiently.

You can head to CityofWeirton.com to see all the new routes that began earlier this month.

Along with those new routes will come a rebranding for Weirton Transit.

Right now they’re deciding on a new logo, and Davis says you’ll see the word ‘corporation’ dropped from the side of those buses.
