Finding a parking spot can be a challenge in many different environments, covering the gamut from retail to residential to recreational locations. Another need is found in the trucking business.

It’s a common site along Kentucky interstates, particularly during evening hours to see large haulers filling up truck stop lots, rest stops, and even exit ramps. Rick Taylor is president of the Kentucky Trucking Association.

“National data, not necessarily Kentucky specific, but national data indicates that sometimes drivers are ending their day as much as an hour early so they can make sure they find adequate parking,” said Taylor.

Taylor said from a productivity standpoint stopping early is not good. The trucking association CEO noted repurposing interstate rest stops or weigh stations is being examined.

Taylor said driving beyond the scheduled time is not a viable option. He said electronic logging devices are used to keep track of time behind the wheel.

“You could continue to drive the truck past your hours of service, but your company is going to know immediately and it’s a violation, a very serious violation,” said Taylor

Taylor said safety, including proper time off the roadway, is the priority. He noted there are a few exceptions for extreme weather events to make sure truckers can get through safely. The Kentucky trucking association expert added he expects funding requests before Congress to be granted and lead to more truck parking spots in the future.
