Lexington Police Department to apply for $117K federal grant to purchase equipment

The Lexington Police Department is applying for a U.S. Justice Department grant worth up to 117-thousand dollars. According to public information officer Sergeant Guy Miller, the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance grant would help officers in a wide variety of scenarios.

“This equipment will make our officers more efficient in a crisis or just an investigation. It'll help our officers train and as well as protective equipment for our mounted unit officers, if they were to fall off a horse during training or out in the field.”

Miller said the department’s recommendations for grant spending include a new $59,000 traffic camera server.

“We have a variety of different units for different situations to help resolve that incident or that crisis quicker and more efficient. We have to equip those units with the right tools and our officers with the right training to address those incidents."

The department is also asking to use grant funds for six new equipped police bicycles, and carriers, vests and E-collars for their K-9 units.
