Lexington Fire Department upgrades fleet with two new engines

The Lexington Fire Department added two new fire engines to its fleet Tuesday.

The two Seagrave fire engines will replace two 20 year old engines, and are meant to reduce downtime needed for maintenance. The department officially put the engines into service with a ceremony Tuesday.

Assistant Chief Joey Harris says the newer trucks are designed based on community need.

“A lot of hours go into designing the specification. So with both of these being centrally located in the downtown area, (one engine) specifically servicing the UK area, the design allows for a shorter wheelbase for the narrower streets and turn radius,” Harris said.

Each engine cost nearly $850,000 dollars. The older engines will become a part of the department’s reserve fleet.
