Wellesley's John Broderick is one of two golfers tied atop the leaderboard after one day at the 116th Massachusetts Amateur Championship.

The Vanderbilt sophomore fired a 4-under 68 on Monday at Framingham Country Club. He's tied with Matt Cowgill, who is originally from Weston and played collegiate golf at James Madison. Cowgill represents Granite Links.

Broderick plays out of the Dedham Golf and Polo Club. He competed in high school at Belmont Hill. The previous Mass. Junior Amateur champion fired five birdies, including three on the back nine. He will tee off at 1:54 p.m. Tuesday for the second round of stroke play.

The top 32 golfers after the first two days will advance to match play. It's the first time Framingham CC has ever hosted the event.

Here are some other players with local connections that have put themselves in strong positions to make the cut for match play:

    Weston Jones

The Sudbury native played a high-risk, high-reward round with six birdies, including three in a row on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes, and four bogeys. He's a rising senior at Rutgers who made the quarterfinals in 2020 and '21 and the Round of 16 last year. His former LIncoln-Sudbury teammates Brendan Frain (1-over 73) and Ryan Whitehead (7-over 79) are also in the field.

    Kyle Tibbetts

He'd be in the field securely after a 2-under 70, tied for eighth. The FCC member birdied three of his first even holes before a bogey and double bogey put him in some trouble around the turn. He played an even back nine.

    Matthew Naumec

The FCC member - and 2023 men's club champion - is among a large clump of players tied at 1-over. He managed birdies on the second, 12th and 18th holes. The former pro was the runner up last season and was a quarterfinalist in 2022.

    Dael Dugan

The Westborough native is tied for 18th at an even-par 72. He carded as many birdies (three) as bogeys.
