Wichita hospital warns of increasing disease cases with children
Pediatricians in the Ascension Medical Group are reporting an increase in cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HMFD) and mononucleosis among children in the Wichita area. HFMD and mono are highly contagious and they are often spread through close contact, including sharing drinks, utensils and other personal items. HMFD mainly affects children under the age of 5, causing fever, sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet. Mono is more common in adolescents and young adults, with the symptoms including fever, sore throat, and fatigue.

It’s also made him angry. “As a pitcher, I would describe myself as being very intense and someone who throws with a little attitude,” the Maize South graduate said. “I like to pitch angry. For me, when I bring some attitude and fire with me out to the mound, I feel like it unlocks a higher level of focus and makes me better. Lenexa wants to collect 1,000 pounds of used plastic bags to make into bench
The city of Lenexa is looking to get a new public bench through unconventional means — by recycling more than 1,000 pounds of plastic bags. Taking a cue from neighboring cities like Merriam, the city has launched a year-long project where it ask residents to donate plastic bags at three locations in hopes of reaching the magic number of 1,000 pounds, enough to craft a bench.
Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium Welcomes New Baby Female Giraffe
KANSAS CITY, (greatergc.com) — There’s a new giraffe in town. Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium announced the birth of a baby female giraffe early on Sunday, June 30. The calf weighed 125 pounds and stood five feet, six inches tall upon arrival. Mom giraffe Makali, aged 12, and the baby are both doing well and bonding behind the scenes.

Wichita Public Schools disproportionally discipline Black and disabled students: DOJ says
An investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice found that the Wichita school district discriminated against students based on race and disability. In a report released Tuesday, the department said Black students were disciplined more frequently and more severely than white students. Black girls were particularly singled out for offenses such as insubordination.
Newton mill and overlay projects to start July 10
NEWTON, Kan. — The City of Newton's annual mill and overlay will begin this week with Medical Center Drive. The contractor, Pearson Construction, will begin milling off asphalt on Wednesday, July 10. City crews will do base pavement patching the following day, and then Pearson will begin the asphalt overlay. Pearson plans to work one lane at a time. They will use a flagging crew to stop traffic and flag drivers around the construction as needed.
