BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) – With those temperatures climbing to possible record numbers, one local county is prepared to open several cooling shelters, should the need arise.

Officials in Brooke County announced that, if needed, three shelters will be opened throughout the county.

Their locations are at the Community Center in Bethany, the Fire Hall in Wellsburg and the Follansbee Community House.

The hours for those shelters will be from 10a.m. until 6p.m. Monday through Friday.

“We have one or two incidents; we can do other things. We have some other stuff in place that we need to, but this is for if we have a mass outage of power or if we have multiple people saying, ‘Hey we need some help,’ we are able to take care of this.”

Greg Moore – Interim Director, EMA/EDA Brooke County

“You want to make sure that you check on your neighbor or the elderly and the very young. They are susceptible to trouble during this heat. If you have a neighbor you can check on… Also, our pets. You want to check on our pets. They can overheat just like humans.”

Michael Bolen – Director, Brooke County Health Department

Brooke County officials are urging people not to call 911 for infomation on the cooling shelters.

For that information you can call 304-479-5269.
