WELLSBURG, W.Va (WTRF) — Wellsburg held their annual Oil Can Derby this morning.

Kids throughout the community came to participate in a high-speed race to see who was the fastest of them all.

Fred Marino, organizer of the Wellsburg Oil Can Derby, says that his father was responsible for starting the derby back up again when he was a kid.

Marino says he’s happy that the derby has grown over the years, and he’s excited to see young racers carry on the Wellsburg tradition.

“We started out the first year with 12 cars, we’re up to 40. To me it’s all about family and bringing families together.”

“It’s really hot when you have masks that are covering you, and it’s really fun to beat people and all that. I had a lot of fun racing.”

    Laney Charlton, derby racer

“I’m just here to have fun, it’s pretty fun.”

    Liam Bryan, derby racer

Marino says if there’s one thing that lasts, it’s the Oil Can Derby. He says it’s the core of Wellsburg and can’t wait to be a part of it for years to come.
