A proposal to give veterans free access to state parks failed to make Michigan’s budget. The initiative would’ve been funded by changing how Michigan residents each year renew their state recreation passport, which grants vehicle access to 103 state parks along with boat launches and other state-managed recreation facilities.

Possible derecho starts in Iowa, leaving trail of storm damage into Michigan
(Radio Iowa) – A powerful series of storms swept over Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan late Monday afternoon and night, spinning off at least one tornado in Iowa and knocking out the power to nearly a half-million Midwesterners. The Weather Channel and several news outlets are calling the storms a derecho, but meteorologist Brooke Hagenhof, at the National Weather Service office in Johnston, says still it’s too early to say that. “The official determination for a derecho is made by the Storm Prediction Center, their national center down in Norman, Oklahoma,” Hagenhoff says. “Derechos have a very strict definition as far as how long they are and how wide that swath of wind damage is, so they will be going through the data today and determining whether this fits that description.”

How Tim Barr got Art’s liquor license
Art’s Tavern in the heart of Glen Arbor celebrates 90 years this year. Tim Barr (who tourists often confuse with “Art”) bought Art’s from Mike Wiesen on July 17, 2000—smack dab in the busy summer season. He couldn’t afford to wait an extra day, or week, for the liquor license to transfer names, so Tim—together with Tom Reay, a long-time Art’s bartender who had just opened Trattoria Funistrada restaurant in Burdickville—chartered a plane from Traverse City to Lansing to sign the paperwork late in the afternoon at the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. They flew home and returned to Glen Arbor, where Art’s was packed. “Being my own boss was the number 1 priority,” recalled Tim.
