Big Lots Shutting Down Stores Amid Financial Uncertainty
Big Lots is planning to shutter around 40 stores as the company opens up about their ability to continue. I've been shopping at Big Lots for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I could spend hours in the toy aisle, and even as a teenager, I spent quite a bit of time thumbing through the DVD and Blu-ray selections. My wife and I still shop at Big Lots on a regular basis today. It's safe to say that it's one of my all-time favorite stores. Need groceries? Done. Kitchenware? Easy. How about some furniture? They've got all kinds of options out on the floor.

Middletown, Ohio: JD Vance’s hometown story
With Sen. JD Vance named Donald Trump’s running mate, commentators are dusting off Vance’s 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” to explain America’s political moment. Eight years ago, Vance was a Never-Trumper, comparing Trumpism to “cultural heroin” in an op-ed for The Atlantic. Yet Vance’s book about growing up in a struggling city in southwestern Ohio became a go-to primer for explaining the Trumpian turn in American politics. One reviewer even likened Vance to an Appalachian Ta-Nehisi Coates, revealing white, blue-collar America to outsiders in the same way that Coates’ writing explained Black America to white readers.
Toledo man one of many parolees under supervision that go missing each year in Ohio
A Toledo man who was released on parole in January after spending 46 years in prison for aggravated murder has since gone missing twice, adding to the tally of more than 2,000 Ohio parolees whose whereabouts are unknown. Bret Vinocur, founder of Block Parole, an Ohio-based website that tracks violent criminals and their parole dates as well as information on missing children, said Michael Morris’ two bouts of going missing while under the supervision of the Adult Parole Authority are representative of a much larger pattern and problem in Ohio. “They are absolutely not watching them,” he said. “There’s like 2,500 guys missing.” According to Facebook posts from the Toledo Police Department, Morris first went missing April 29 and was subsequently located the next day. The post detailed concerns for his safety, noting Morris suffers from Alzheimer’s and walks with a limp.
