Pennsylvania Man Charged with Rape of Minor After Snapchat Meeting, Faces Extradition to Massachusetts
A Pennsylvania man, identified as Edward Garry, has been charged with the rape of a minor after allegedly meeting the victim through Snapchat and then driving to a hotel in Brookline to carry out the assault, according to authorities. As per Boston25News, Garry faces an aggravated statutory rape charge with a greater than 10-year age difference which implicates the seriousness of the accusation laid before him, the purported meeting and subsequent event occurred after an online discourse that promises safety yet delivers danger.
Bankrupt Steward Health to close two Massachusetts hospitals
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bankrupt hospital owner Steward Health Care will close two locations in Massachusetts after failing to find a buyer for them, the company said Friday. Steward filed for bankruptcy in May, putting all of its 31 hospitals up for sale in an effort to address its $9 billion debt.
Public input opportunity for state Age and Dementia Action Plan
GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — In preparation for updates to the Massachusetts Age and Dementia Action Plan, LifePath, the Franklin Regional Council of Governments, and the Massachusetts Healthy Aging Collaborative will be co-hosting a listening session to collect local feedback for the state on how to be more age and dementia-friendly. Exhibit at Historic Deefield – Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North
This coming week is the last remaining days to see a special exhibition called “Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North” at Historic Deerfield. I recommend it before it closes Thursday August 4. The show, curated by the American Folk Art Museum, is a “corrective to histories that define slavery and anti-black racism as a largely Southern issue.” It is unknown to me if the curators or interpreters or docents (ours was excellent) know about Ancestral Bridges here in Amherst. However, in just under 100 artifacts that range from paintings to needlework, to photographs and sculpture, the show “offers a new window onto Black representation in a region that is often overlooked in narratives of early African American history. “
Puffers Pond Remains Closed to Swimming
Puffer’s Pond will remain closed to swimming until further notice due to high levels of E. coli bacteria. There are many factors that could be contributing to this ongoing issue and the town is looking into causes and exploring long-term solutions. The town conducts water quality testing weekly with results posted on Wednesdays at www.amherstma.gov/puffers. The most recent results were posted on Wednesday, July 24 and new results will be posted on Wednesday, July 31.
Town Schedules Three Public Hearings on Proposed Changes to Jones Library Expansion Design
The Town of Amherst has scheduled three public hearings on proposed changes to the design of the Jones Library expansion. Recent value engineering adopted by the Jones Library Trustees in the hopes of lowering the overall cost of the project have resulted in significant changes to the design from what was originally proposed – requiring re-approvals from both the Planning Board and the Amherst Historical Commission. These changes include the elimination of nearly all sustainability features and many historic features that would impact the historic character of the building.
Spirit Shoppe creates action plan after selling alcohol to minor
SOUTH DEERFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Spirit Shoppe will be reducing their hours across all locations after the Deerfield Police conducted a compliance check at the South Deerfield location. An 18 year old Frontier Regional School student working with the police for the compliance check bought a six pack of beer without having their identification checked. As a result of the violation, the store fired the employee and created an action plan including reducing hours and hiring full-time employees only.
