The Wake County Sheriff’s Office said this week it has begun to receive tips from the public in its investigation into last week’s shooting death of Serenity Spencer near Wendell.

WCSO reported July 1 that Spencer, 24, had passed away at the hospital.

June 30 around 10:40 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a shooting in the 7000 block of Hodge Road, near Wendell. When they arrived, they located an adult female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The woman, later identified as Spencer, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and later died at the hospital, according to authorities.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office does not have a suspect in custody at this time, but the sheriff’s office said investigators are actively following leads.

“Based on the investigation, we believe the shooter and Ms. Spencer were known to each other,” a sheriff’s office spokeswoman said in response to a query from the Wake Weekly. “Investigators do not believe this to be a random shooting. There is no known threat to the community at large.”

The motive in the shooting is still under investigation.

Whether anything might have been stolen is also a matter that remains under investigation.

The caliber and other specifics of the firearm that was used in the shooting remain under investigation, but the sheriff’s office indicated that rifle casings were recovered at the scene.

Investigators found multiple rifle shell casings in the roadway, but a rifle has not been recovered, according to the WCSO.

Investigators said they believe the suspect shot from the road.

The sheriff’s office said it was not able at this time to comment on how many times Spencer was shot.

“We are awaiting the Medical Examiner’s report for official injury information,” the sheriff’s office spokeswoman said.

Whether only one shooter, or multiple shooters, involved is a matter that is still investigation, according to the sheriff;s office.

The WCSO said information has been coming in from the public.

“We are thankful for all the information we have received from the public,” a sheriff’s office spokeswoman said. “Investigators have received leads and information that they continue to follow up on. Anyone with information that would assist in the investigation is asked to call WCSO at 919-856-6911.”

The sheriff’s office was not able to clarify how close they are to being able to make an arrest in the case.

“Investigators are diligently working on this case and will until it is closed,” the spokeswoman said.

Spencer was standing outside the home at the time of the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
