Clinical Director for Special Olympics Delaware honored with health leadership award
WILMINGTON, Del. - Don Blackburn, the Clinical Director for the Opening Eyes program of Special Olympics Delaware has been awarded the 2024 Golisano Health Leadership Award. Blackburn has worked in his leadership position with Opening Eyes for more than 20 years, and his dedication to improving access to vision care for athletes has made significant impacts on the lives of numerous Special Olympics Athletes in Delaware, said the nonprofit.
John Lloyd Sheaffer III
John Lloyd Sheaffer III, 79, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 21, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Andrea Sponaugle Sheaffer. John was born March 5, 1945 in Lititz, PA. He graduated from Warwick High School in 1963 where he played tennis (won Districts) and was first trombone chair. John attended Penn State University for one year where he played number one on the tennis team. Then he transferred to University of Maryland where he played number one. He was the Middle States Tennis Association Champion in men's singles (1968, 1969) and three-time champion for doubles. In 2003 he was inducted into the Lancaster County Tennis Hall of Fame.

Donn "DC" Herr of Lititz, PA, passed away after a short illness on July 15, 2024 at Maple Farm Nursing Center. Born October 10, 1946 in Lancaster, PA he was the son of the late Loretta Jean and Charles V. Herr, Jr. He was the husband of Debra (Buzby) Herr with whom he would have celebrated forty-four years of marriage in September.

Charles Milsen Reading, 85, formerly of Lititz, died Friday July 19, 2024 at Keystone Villa, Ephrata, where he was a resident. Born in Pottsville on February 14, 1939, he was the son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Childs) Reading. Charlie married his lovely wife Luise (Wubbena) Reading on November 23, 1968.

Carl E. Sideman of Lititz, a nature enthusiast and patent-winning chemist, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2024 at UPMC Lititz Hospital. He was 84. Born in Lowell, Mass., he was the son of the late Lillian (nee McCauley) and Edwin Sideman. Carl, the eldest of four siblings, helped out at the family's fresh fruit market in town as a boy. When he wasn't at the market, he spent time in nature, keenly observing plants and animals. Often he'd hike and fish for hours and make discoveries in the surrounding woods near his childhood home. These adventures laid the groundwork for a lifelong love of science, the outdoors and an almost encyclopedic knowledge of flora and fauna.

No more booths: Turnpike set to expand Open Road Tolling in coming years
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission gave more details this week about its timeline for ditching toll booths in favor of Open Road Tolling (ORT). All toll roads east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension will be converted to ORT, a system that electronically charges motorists at highway speeds, in January 2025.
