Artist Dominick Di Meo (1927-2024) has passed, Corbett vs. Dempsey gallery relays. “An extensive period of Di Meo’s youth was spent in a polio ward, which left him with an aura of fierce angst and a fatalistic humor that he carried into his life as an artist.” Di Meo studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he met much of his artistic peers, including Leon Golub, Ted Halkin and Evelyn Statsinger. Di Meo helped Golub organize the independent Exhibition Momentum shows; he also worked on the Phalanx group exhibitions at the ID and participated in early meetings with John Miller that ultimately led to the foundation of the Museum of Contemporary Art. Arriving in New York in 1968, Di Meo set up a loft space studio in Soho, where he worked until only a few years ago. Di Meo exhibited in the 1967 Whitney Annual and showed new work in a solo slot at MoMA’s P.S. 1 in 1982. Di Meo was featured in “Monster Roster: Existentialist Art in Postwar Chicago” (Smart Museum of Art, Chicago, 2016), the first museum survey of the group of artists with whom he was first associated.
