    Hartford wins Hayward baseball tournament

    The Hartford Hawks emerged as the champions of the six-team Chippewa Valley Bank Northern Lights Baseball Tournament over the June 14-16 weekend at Larry Somerville Field. Hartford defeated the Hayward Hawks 3-0 in Sunday’s championship game.

    Hayward opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over the Holmen Features Friday night. The Hawks scored two runs in the second inning on a Holmen throwing error.

    Austin Wessel’s RBI double increased the Hawks’ lead to 3-0 in the third inning. They added two more runs, including a double by Sam Paden, and a single by Keith Heinz.

    In the fifth inning, Micah Bacon singled and scored to put the Hawks up 6-0. Sam Paden had an RBI double. Phil Zeigle had a single and a double and Terry Kilmer had a double.

    In the sixth inning, Bacon walked, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single by Gunnar Hansen and scored on Austin Wessel’s sacrifice fly.

    Hawks starting pitcher Michael Hilker Jr. tossed three innings, giving up three hits and striking out two to get the win. Matt Flesher pitched the last four innings to earn the save, giving up one hit, a walk and striking out one.

    The Hawks had 12 hits, no errors and six left on base while Holmen had three hits, no runs, two errors and three left on base.

    Andrew Fischer took the loss for Holmen.

    Gunnar Hansen had three hits, Micah Bacon had two hits, Phil Zeigle had two hits including a double, and Terry Kilmer and Austin Wessel each had a double.

    On Sunday, the Hawks defeated the Eau Claire Bears 10-2 to advance to the tourney semifinals. Jonah Sande pitched all seven innings to earn the win, giving up six hits while striking out two. The Bears’ two runs were unearned.

    Wyatt Hansen had three hits including a double, Tom Danczyk and Austin Wessel had two hits apiece, Kilmer had two hits including a double, Zeigle had a double, and Bacon, Paden and Kanters had one hit apiece

    In Sunday’s semifinal, the Hawks rolled past the Minneapolis Cobras 9-1. Leading 1-0, they broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth inning, including five hits and a Cobras throwing error,

    Sam Paden had a two-run double, Terry Kilmer drove in a run with a single, Josh Kanters was hit by a pitch and Gunnar Hansen drew a bases-loaded walk. Kilmer scored on a passed ball and Kanters scored on an error.

    For the game, Gunnar and Wyatt each had two hits and Wessel had one hit.

    In Sunday’s championship game, Tom Danczyk started on the mound. Hartford picked up a run in the second inning. Phil Zeigle came in to pitch in the fifth inning. The visitors scored a run in the second inning; the game was a 1-0 until the sixth, when Hartford scored on a single, a throwing error and wild pitch.

    Kilmer had a double in the sixth. Gunnar Hansen reached base on an error and Wyatt Hansen was hit by a pitch. Kilmer was out trying to score on a fly ball.

    Hartford added two runs in the top of the seventh on a single, an infield hit, a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.

    In the bottom of the seventh with two out, Tom Danczyk beat out an infield roller for a single and Phil Zeigle singled to center. Kilmer then flied out to center to end the game. Ben Spiers pitched the win for Hartford.

    The Hawks improved to 5-2 on the season.
