(Updated) West Haven driver Nader Elias Hanania, 63, died early Wednesday morning after his vehicle was struck by a car that blew through a red light at South Frontage Road and College Street.

City police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart said that the fatal motor vehicle crash occurred at around 4:54 a.m.

Video footage obtained on scene shows Hanania (driving a Hyundai Accent) traveling on College Street from MLK Boulevard, away from downtown. As Hanania began to enter the intersection of South Frontage Road and College Street, a Toyota Supra driving south on South Frontage Road ran through a red light and collided with the passenger side of Hanania’s Hyundai.

The red light runner then fled the scene.

Hanania was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.

City police have a suspect and an investigation is ongoing. That area around South Frontage, College, and York Streets is currently closed to traffic.

Wednesday’s fatal crash comes as the city is looking to install 19 automated traffic enforcement cameras — including 11 cameras focused on ticketing drivers who go through red lights — at various locations across the city, including nearby at South Frontage and Park Street.
