A grey BMW sedan with three minors in it collided with a Subaru SUV at the intersection of West Stadium Avenue and Vine Street late Wednesday afternoon, according to Lt. Stason Wiete of the Purdue Police Department.

Officers responded to the area at 4:50 p.m., finding the front of the BMW crunched up against a splintered utility pole on the edge of the sidewalk at the intersction. The Subaru appeared to be contacting both the utility pole and the BMW, with half the vehicle resting beyond the road onto the sidewalk.

Wiete said the driver of the Subaru, a female, ran a stop sign while going north on Vine Street, reportedly contacting the BMW. The approximate speeds of the vehicles are unknown, though the driver of the BMW, described as an "older lady," said she was going the speed limit.

Wiete said minor injuries were sustained by the occupants of the Subaru, who stood with people who said they were family comforting them as two, both females, cried. None from the party agreed to comment on the collision.

The woman driving the BMW was transported to the hospital for evaluation, and Wiete said he is unclear on the extent of her injuries.

Police and fire vehicles barricaded the stretch from West Stadium Avenue, at the North Grant Street intersection to east to Vine Street. Wiete said the road would be closed for "at least a couple hours, maybe more," as police wait on Duke Energy to secure the power line which runs across Vine Street.

The driver of the Subaru reportedly said she could not see the stop sign behind a tree while approaching it. Wiete said officers saw the tree, and he said it could have contributed to the female running the stop sign.

The Subaru was dented and scraped along both passenger-side doors.
