A pair of charges related to marijuana possession and distribution were filed against a Michigan woman on Friday after police were called to a rural West Lafayette business the day before.

Prosecutors charged Julie A Martin, 50, of Garden City, Michigan, with one felony – dealing in marijuana – and one misdemeanor – possession of marijuana in court documents on Friday.

A Tippecanoe County officer responded to a call to removed an RV parked in the lot of a business in the 2700 block of Klondike Road on Thursday. A police report indicated that the officer smelled a marijuana odor emanating from the parked vehicle. The officer then used a police dog to verify his suspicions.

According to the affidavit, Martin approached the vehicle and she indicated to the officer that it was her vehicle.

The officer found jar inside a backpack and several trash bags that contained a green leafy substance consistent with the characteristics of marijuana. The trash bags reportedly contained 17.3 pounds of what a field test identified as Tetrahydrocannabinol THC). The jar in the backpack, which also tested positive to THC, contained 1.1 pounds of the green leafy substance.

The affidavit indicated that the officer overhead a phone call where he heard “Martin admit the marijuana in the RV was hers and that it was legal in Michigan. Martin also indicated she had a medical card for marijuana.”

Martin was booked into the Tippecanoe County Jail on Thursday morning and remained incarcerated as of Friday afternoon.
