Update: At 9:11 a.m. July 23 on its website, and moments later on X, Monmouth University issued an all clear and said, "Our investigation has been concluded and there is no threat to campus. The shelter-in-place has been lifted."

An online update explained the morning's lockdown further, saying, "In the early morning hours of July 23, 2024, the Monmouth University Police Department (MUPD) received reports from multiple students and employees indicating that they received an email from an individual alleging a bomb threat and claiming to be armed and hiding on campus."

The university said it immediately ordered the lockdown at that time and multiple law enforcement agencies were called in to assist in the investigation.

"With assistance from these agencies, MUPD conducted a search of campus buildings and found no evidence to substantiate the threat. An 'all clear' alert was issued to the campus community at 9:05 a.m.," the update continued.

Delayed opening for offices remains in place for 10 a.m. July 23. Classes with start times at or after 11 a.m. will meet as scheduled. The Department of Athletics’ morning sports camps have been canceled for Tuesday and will resume Wednesday.

The original story below was posted at 8:29 a.m. July 23.

As of 7:19 a.m. Tuesday, Monmouth University is still on lockdown after the school notified students and the public of an active investigation on campus.

"As we continue our investigation, residents are still asked to shelter in place. As any information becomes available, we will update you immediately," the school wrote in the update.

In its initial early-morning alert , Monmouth said: "There is an emergency at Monmouth University. A lockdown is in effect. This is not a drill. Please close and lock all doors and await further instructions."

Five subsequent updates have posted to Monmouth University's alert page since. The most recent, indicates university police continue to investigate and search buildings. An update on social media channel X also served to keep the public informed.

Monmouth University did not immediately respond to a request for comment or additional information. This story is developing.
