Contributions of Women During the American Civil War
The Gettysburg Foundation will present a special evening program at the historic George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, at 6 p.m. Join Sharon Jackson Tice in the historic barn for Contributions of Women During the American Civil War. Tice will present an overview of the many contributions of women during the American Civil War. “Contributions of Women During the American Civil War” explores stories of extraordinary women who pushed back against societal and cultural norms that defined the accepted “culture of womanhood.” Tice will discuss women’s involvement in the war that expanded into realms such as spying, soldiering and defending the homefront. This special program will feature the story of the Nancy Hart Militia in LaGrange, Georgia. The Nancy Hart Militia was a group of women who stepped far outside of their comfort zones as they armed themselves and prepared to defend their community against Union troops.

Chad Snyder appointed to state board of funeral directors
As a third-generation funeral director, Chad Snyder has a unique perspective of the profession. In 1947, Chad's grandfather, Charles F. Snyder, opened a funeral home in downtown Lancaster, and the business grew to offer locations in Millersville, Willow Street, Lititz and other parts of the county. Chad watched his father, Chip Snyder, run the business after Charles retired, and Chad became the director in 2018. Chad was appointed to the Pennsylvania State Board of Directors earlier this year, and he said he plans to use his experience to bridge the gap between funeral directors and state legislators to benefit Lancaster and communities throughout the state.

I was proud to cast my affirmative vote for a basic education funding bill that would help get our public schools the dollars they need to assist students, teachers and staff, and I spoke in support of the bill prior to passage. The legislation is a result of the bipartisan Basic Education Funding Commission’s findings that Pennsylvania has not fulfilled its constitutional obligations when it comes to public education.

Tractor-trailer crash backing up I-81 traffic in Dauphin County
A Wednesday afternoon crash involving several tractor-trailers has created a backlog of traffic on Interstate 81 near Harrisburg, PennDOT said. The left southbound lane of I-81 is closed as of 2 p.m. at exit 66 to downtown Harrisburg/Front Street, according to PennDOT spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler. Southbound traffic is slow-moving, she said, but getting by on the right lane.
Former Lancaster police officer charged with attempted rape posts bail
A former Lancaster police officer who is charged with attempted rape and sexual assault has posted bail. Court records show that Andrew Selby's bail was lowered from $500,000 to $50,000. Last month, a judge ordered Selby to stand trial on charges that he sexually assaulted four girls in the 1990s.
