West Monroe, LA. (KTVE/KARD) — NBC 10’s Jeremy Bryant recaps the highlight moments from around the Arklamiss including the annual Wilbert Ellis Baseball camp that gave over 100 campers the opportunity to learn the game of baseball from the former legendary Grambling State Baseball coach.

Shifting over to the gridiron to check in on college football, there won’t be a question as to who will be the starter week one for the Bulldogs any longer after Louisiana Tech football head coach Sonny Cumbie officially named Jack Turner as his new signal caller for the upcoming season. After taking over the reins from former Bulldogs’ quarterback Hank Bachmeier who transferred to Wake Forest in the offseason, Turner said he learned a lot in his lone season as his under study.

“Hank was a great leader to have in front of me. He exemplified having a light heartedness towards the game and not making it more than what it was. [It was] kind of similar to what coach Cumbie does [which] is just keeping it simple. He taught me how to do that and just go out and play the game, trust what you have been coached to do, trust what you’ve been practicing and training in the offseason to do. I would say that’s one of the biggest things he showed me is to trust yourself and just go out and play the game,” said Turner.

Switching over to the other side of the Arklamiss, the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks have their own agenda they are pushing for this year’s football roster under first year head coach Bryant Vincent. The clear objective to recruit locally with 17 players on the current roster being natives from the local area. Vincent believes that will go a long way to boost the morale and motivation to play harder on gameday.

“I think when you have guys that’s its personal [for them]and when it means something to them it’s not just about ‘hey this was just my only offer or this was whatever you want to talk about NIL or education or whatever,'” said Vincent. “When you’re from there and you grew up there and it means something to you–we’ve tried to expand our footprint locally and really in northeast Louisiana, but when it means something to them and it’s personal there’s power in that. We’ve tried to build that army also to take this mission together.”
