Jenningston, WV (WVDN) –Marsha Waybright began the Laurel River Club B&B with a vision in mind – to educate visitors on a wide variety of topics, as well as provide a place to relax and unwind. Since West Virginia’s early beginnings, agriculture has played an important role in its development, and Waybright provides programs from her Laurel Fork Farm to encourage others to enjoy, protect and conserve the land.

A recent free Lunch & Learn program focusing on High Tunnels was offered on July 9th with 20 participants, and was such a success “that we hope to do it more in the future, allowing people to connect with others who can help them reach their goals,” she said. Waybright provides a variety of such programs throughout the year, using professional speakers many times to educate attendees. She is already hard at work “planning more Lunch & Learn sessions for next summer that will be open to the public. Right now, we have Continuing Education Experiences for Veterinarians, Veterinarian Technicians, and Euthanasia Technicians, Hunter Safety Education Courses, and different farm experiences such as canning and preserving your own food, hunting, tracking, and butchering.” Waybright also began the West Virginia School of Traditional Skills last year to offer experiential learning in a fun environment while allowing participants to connect with nature.

Waybright has partnered with several individuals and organizations to offer a variety of public programs at the B&B setting. Certified in many areas to be one of the speakers herself, at this recent program she helped with a Bio Char demonstration with the Tygarts Valley Conservation District, the Easter West Virginia Community and Technical College, the NRCS, and the USDA. “They all had representatives present to share information about the different programs they offer.” Demonstrations and Q&A time provided a great learning experience for attendees.

One of the main reasons for the recent Lunch & Learn program was because “it’s a daunting task to find specific grants and programs to help people reach their goals, “ she said. “By having a Lunch and Learn , we provided a very casual setting to allow people to connect and ask questions and get to know the people who are in charge of some of these programs.” It provides participants the opportunity to “meet others who have already been through a program and can give them advice on how to get the most out of it. We are hoping to build connections and help people find ways to meet their goals and needs.”

A highlight of the program was Waybright’s 11-year-old daughter, Josie, and her chicken presentation. Josie loves to educate the public about chickens and has a small flock of bantam chickens, including Frizzles, Silkies, and booted varieties. She likes to bring awareness to the fact that some people are afraid of chickens; hers are more like pets and she encourages people to touch them. For that reason, Waybright had stickers made that say, “I touched a chicken and I liked it!” Like her mother, Josie is interested in educating others.

Waybright has several Continuing Education Experiences for Veterinarians coming up. A class to obtain CE hours will be offered on August 5 & 6. These classes are good for Veterinarians, Registered Veterinarian Technicians, and Certified Animal Euthanasia Technicians.
