LI developer partners with Sportime to build several new projects

A Long Island real estate developer is partnering with an area sports club firm to expand its pickleball facilities.

Great Neck-based Hornig Capital Partners is about to begin construction on a $2.5 million redevelopment in Westbury to create a 30,000-square-foot pickleball facility for Sportime Pickleball, a growing division of the sports and racquet club company.

The new venue, designed by Mojo Stumer Associates, will be housed in three buildings on 1.6 acres at 575 Merrick Ave., which has been occupied by badminton and volleyball clubs. The property will be transformed into a Sportime Pickleball club featuring 13 indoor pickleball courts, a caf, pro shop, two party rooms, new locker rooms and showers.

Hornig Capital Partners, led by principal Daren Hornig, is a real estate investment and development firm that has a diverse portfolio of office, retail, multifamily and industrial properties. The company has worked with Sportime before, most recently on the soon-to-be completed $8 million renovations of its 200,000-square-foot Sportime John McEnroe Tennis Academy in Port Washington. Hornig Capital owns the property and leases it to Sportime and the developer isputting the finishing touches on the renovation of the facility, which will have 13 tennis courts and 12 pickleball courts.

In addition to developing the Westbury facility, Hornig is poised to begin construction on three other Sportime Pickleball facilities. The new projects are currently under development in Armonk, Englewood, N.J. and Wayne, N.J. The new Sportime Pickleball in Westbury is expected to open in October.

Hornig said he is partnering with Sportime because of the firm’s past experience and success in operating sports and racquet clubs.

“The key is having the right operator who knows what they’re doing,” Hornig told LIBN. “The reason I partnered with Sportime is that they have a 35-year track record, and they know what they’re doing.”

Founded in 1994, Kings Park-based Sportime Clubs has more than 190 indoor and outdoor tennis and pickleball courts, fitness clubs and sports arenas at 14 locations on Long Island, New York City, Westchester County and upstate New York, according to the company’s website.
