(Des Moines) With schools back in session, the Iowa State Patrol is reminding drivers to be safe when they see school buses on the roads.

“These buses are out there, so watch for those amber lights, and watch for the red lights coming on,” said Sergeant Alex Dinkla from the Iowa State Patrol. “The school buses make frequent stops, and we have to stop for these school buses, and we need to be safe so our precious cargo get on and off the buses safely.”

Sergeant Alex Dinkla says many buses are now equipped with cameras, and I-S-P is ready to track down drivers who break the law.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, millions of children ride school buses each school day. Officials say school buses are among the safest vehicles on the road. Less than 1% of all traffic fatalities involve children in school vehicles. However, children are more at risk when approaching or leaving a school bus. It’s important for all drivers, parents, and students to understand school bus safety.
