ISU Opens Conference Play on Road at the Cougars

(Ames, IA) — So far so good for Iowa St. football but a new season begins on Saturday as the Cyclones start play in the Big 12 visits Houston.

ISU has wins over North Dakota, Iowa and last week crushed Arkansas St. 52-7. This week they face a Cougars team that is somewhat unpredictable — they played well against Oklahoma but lost 16-12 and then last week played poorly in a 34-0 loss to Cincinnati Iowa St. Head Coach Matt Campbell says it doesn’t matter what Houston has done, his team needs to step it up even more because to sustain success in a season is not easy

Right now, ISU has seen tremendous success in the air — Rocco Becht has thrown for 743 yards and 6 TD with 2 INT and has only been sacked once. On the ground, its been a different story. Abu Sama has just 124 yards in three games; Jaylon Jackson has 92 yards. Campbell says the numbers are misleading, ISU has got to get better in the ground game

On defense, injuries have plagued the linebackers but Beau Freyler has been a constant at safety — the senior from Colorado Springs is second in tackles with 20. Campbell says he is an inspiration

Campbell and ISU is facing a Houston team with a new Head Coach, Willie Fritz has made the rounds at Central Missouri, Sam Houston St. Georgia Southern, Tulane and now the Cougars. Campbell says there is some unpredictability in preparing to face them

Campbell is impressed with what Fritz has done with Houston in a short amount of time

#18 Iowa St. 3-0 visits 1-3 Houston in their Big 12 opener. A win for the Cyclones will make Matt Campbell the all-time winningest coach in Cyclone history. Kickoff at 6 pm, Cyclone Pre game at 4 pm on 96.5 FM KSOM.
