    Denison-Schleswig Tops Atlantic in 3-2

    (Atlantic) Denison-Schleswig downed Atlantic three sets to two in a battle in high school volleyball on Thursday.

    The Monarchs won the first set 25-19, led by Gabby Cardenas’s front-line play. The visitors took a 5-4 lead early and never trailed after that.

    The Trojans dominated the second set. The home team broke away from a 2-2 tie, scored nine straight points, and went on to win 25-14. Paytn Harter and Jillian Saathoff took advantage of pinpoint sets from Zoey Kirchhoff, scoring on numerous kills from the middle, quick sets, and blocks at the net.

    The Monarchs returned the favor in set three, a back-and-forth contest that ended with the Monarchs winning 28-26. Atlantic bounced back in set three, winning 25-16; however, the Monarchs finished off the match with a 15-13 win in set five.

    Denison-Schleswig posted 52 kills on the night, led by Gabby Cardenas and Emily Gehlsen. Setter Kyia Clark, who entered the contest with 311 assists, posted 42 assists in the five-set contest.

    The Monarchs compete in the Boyer Valley Tournament on Saturday. Atlantic travels to Harlan on October 3.
