(Des Moines, IA) — It’s been months since Iowa’s devastating tornadoes and floods. Clean-up continues, roofs repaired, fences mended, but a post-storm threat lingers…

“We are hearing about different scams that are out there, one of which is some FEMA scams possibly where people might be impersonating FEMA representatives,” explained Sonya Sellmeyer with the Iowa Insurance Division.

Sellmeyer says people hit by this year’s tornadoes and floods should watch out for another threat.

“If you get something in the mail that appears that you have applied for FEMA benefits and you haven’t, make sure you call FEMA at their fraud hotline.”

She says if someone shows up claiming to be with FEMA, ask for I-D. She says also watch out for disaster repair-con artists.

Storm chasers always start scamming storm victims after the desasters.
