HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF ROCKLAND COUNTY RECEIVES DONATION
The Hudson Gateway Realtor® Foundation in White Plains, the charitable arm of the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors®, recently presented a check for $2,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Rockland County. Located in New City, Habitat for Humanity of Rockland is an independently operated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, which was founded in 1997 to work in partnership with thousands of Rockland County volunteers and qualified low-income families of all races, religions and creeds to build and renovate homes for those in need. In addition, the organization provides financial education for families to have access to safe, affordable housing where they can grow in a stable environment.
New Rochelle identifies $350M in flood mitigation projects, begins some
In the wake of a study that was completed in September of last year that identified 170 flood mitigation projects with a total construction value of more than $350 million, New Rochelle a few days ago launched the first of an initial $10 million in projects. A project at Harmon Drive and Storer Avenue is the first capital improvement project designed to mitigate flooding issues and promote climate resiliency. It involves upgrading stormwater piping at an estimated cost of more than $600,000. More than a dozen additional projects are slated to take place over the next two years.
UNIVERSITY APPOINTS VICE PRESIDENT
Dominican University in Blauvelt recently announced that Sr. Jennifer Schaaf, O.P.Dm. will be installed as vice president for mission and ministry beginning Sept. 1. Schaaf is a member of the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt and has been working the past 11 years as an assistant chaplain at St. Thomas More Catholic Chapel and Center at Yale University, New Haven.
APARTMENT COMPLEX CREATES SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The Yonkers Industrial Development Agency (YIDA) recently presented 10 Yonkers high school students with 2024 Parkledge Breakthrough Scholarship awards totaling $25,000. The high school seniors each won awards of $2,500 and were given to only those seniors who have been enrolled in a Yonkers school for all four years of high school, in good academic standing and accepted to a post-secondary institution that leads to a degree, license or certification. The awardees were required to have a recommendation from a member of the faculty who knows the student well, provide a personal statement concerning his/her future community service goals and how his/her education will contribute to these goals. The scholarship fund was created by the Parkledge Apartments.
Power Express proposes taking Rockland properties
The $6 billion Champlain Hudson Power Express Project has petitioned a court to condemn property in Rockland County to install underground cables. CHPE Properties Inc. says it needs to use the eminent domain process to acquire temporary and permanent easements on about three acres of commercial property along a 0.3 mile stretch of State Route 9W in West Haverstraw.
LITIGATION ATTORNEY STARTS TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE CONNECTICUT BAR ASSOCIATION
Pullman & Comley litigation attorney James T. (Tim) Shearin recently started his term as the 101st president of the Connecticut Bar Association (CBA). He was officially installed as president at the CBA’s annual meeting on June 10 at the 2024 Connecticut Legal Conference in Hartford. Shearin served as CBA vice president in 2022-2023 and president-elect in 2023-2024; his term as president runs through June 30, 2025. Margaret I. Castinado is the outgoing president.
Husky Healthcare expansion goes into effect
On July 1, children up to age 15, regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents, will be able to use the state subsidized Husky Healthcare program. Previously, unrestricted access to the program for children could end at age 12 depending upon their immigration status. The state estimates that this expansion will provide additional coverage to thousands of children across Connecticut.

Letter to judge: Donald Trump’s attorneys have sent a letter to New York State Judge Juan Merchan asking the judge to throw out Trump’s conviction in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. They contend that yesterday’s Supreme Court decision giving presidents immunity from prosecution means certain evidence used to convict Trump should never have been admitted because it dealt with things that happened while Trump was president. The sexual encounter with Daniels took place before Trump was president. Trump’s attorneys also asked that his sentencing in the case, scheduled for July 11, be delayed.

Last minute reprieve protects White Plains gas station
A White Plains gas station that was ordered to vacate the premises by June 30 has won a reprieve that allows it to continue pumping gas for now. U.S. District Court Judge Philip M. Halpern granted a restraining order on June 28 that stops BP Products North America Inc. “from disturbing the status quo” of Ranjit Singh’s Bajaj Gas and Convenience Inc. until at least July 12.
