Projects to be funded by state grants in Westchester and Orange announced
Studies have identified 21 projects to receive New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and NY Forward funding that previously was awarded. The projects are in Sleepy Hollow in Westchester, the Town of Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson in Orange County, and the City of Port Jervis in Orange County. The specific projects were announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Iran mourns: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has proclaimed five days of mourning for Iran’s President Raisi and the others who were killed in a helicopter crash over the weekend. An election has been scheduled for June 28 to select a new president. Iran blames the crash on an unspecified technical issue. The U.S. State Department sent condolences to the Iranian people and added, “As Iran selects a new president, we reaffirm our support for the Iranian people and their struggle for human rights and fundamental freedoms.” The White House put out a statement criticizing President Raisi for having supported Middle East extremist groups.

During Maternal Mental Health Month, Open Door Family Medical Center, serving the Hudson Valley, wants to draw attention to the risks of postpartum depression (PPD). “Any new mom can get postpartum depression,” said Judy McCarthy Dalton, a midwife at the center. “Yes, there are red flags, like if there is a past history of depression or anxiety, or if there was postpartum depression following previous births. But any new mother is at risk.”

PETS ANDA PACKAGING
Most modern corporations have a pet charity or designated nonprofit organization, which becomes the beneficiary of recurring company fundraising activities. Packaging and Crating Technologies (PACT), a Watertown-based manufacturing company of durable cardboard moving containers for the military, commercial and industrial sectors, is earmarking some funds for a new, actual pet charity that matches stray animals with forever homes. Specifically, PACT recently donated $1,000 to Beacon of Light Animal Rescue to help launch the New Hartford foster-based organization that services dogs and cats around Connecticut.
Hyde Park drive-in may be reopening
The federal government’s National Park Service (NPS), which owns the nine acres that are home to the Hyde Park drive-in movie theater at 4114 Albany Post Road in Hyde Park, is close to signing a lease with a new operator for the theater, the Business Journal was told by the NPS. A representative at the agency said that lease documents are under review but did not have an estimate on when the lease might be signed or when the theater might open for the summer season. The drive-in is one of only about 200 drive-ins remaining in the U.S., down from the approximately 4,000 drive-in theaters that were operating in the 1950s when the outdoor movie theater business peaked.
