U.S. and world news for May 31
Trump sentencing: Judge Juan Merchan has set July 11 at 10 a.m. as the date and time for sentencing Donald Trump after his conviction on 34 felonies. The unanimous guilty verdicts on all counts were returned by the jury that heard the Trump hush money case. The New York City Probation Department will be preparing a pre-sentencing report on Trump that will be submitted to the judge. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is expected to ask for some jail time while Trump’s attorneys are expected to ask for probation based on this being Trump’s first criminal conviction and his previous convictions being in civil cases. The maximum theoretical jail time would be four years on each of the 34 counts, with the penalties expected to be served concurrently rather than consecutively.

BREAKING NEWS: Verdict reached in Trump hush money trial
The jury in the Manhattan trial of Donald Trump in connection with the hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels has reached a verdict. The jury was reported to be preparing the necessary paperwork prior to returning to the courtroom where the verdict will be read and the jury polled. It was anticipated that the jury filling out verdict forms would take 30 minutes. CNN reported that Trump’s son Eric is in the courtroom, sitting behind his father. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg also is in the courtroom. Judge Juan Merchan had said earlier in the day that he planned to release the jury at about 4:30 this afternoon. Donald Trump’s defense team had been hoping that the trial would end with an acquittal or hung jury but the fact that there is a verdict indicates that the hung jury scenario is not going to happen. The jury must report a verdict for each of the 34 counts with which Trump was charged. Further details as they become available.
