Officials from the sity of Yonkers, New York state, Westchester County, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the New York State Homes and Community Renewal joined with the Mulford Corp. recently to celebrate the grand opening of La Mora Senior Housing, one of the few affordable housing projects in the nation that uses energy-saving Passive House design in a modular construction format.

European Rocket: The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched its first heavy-lift Ariane 6 rocket on July 9 from a launchpad in French Guyana. This test flight came after years of delays, and was still marred by a glitch which caused one engine to shut down during a reignition phase which prevented the completion of all mission objectives. Nonetheless the ESA has indicated plans to continue using the design with hopes to compete with private sector SpaceX and Blue Horizon craft that are currently launching satellites and servicing the ISS.

Among the laws recently signed by Governor Ned Lamont is one which will give the state a 30 year period for net operating loss carryforward. Although many states follow the federal provisions on the matter which allow for an unlimited number of years, Maine is the only state in New England that follows the federal provision. Nearby states including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts all have 20 year provisions, while Rhode Island only allows five years. Vermont and New Hampshire both set 10 year periods.

Taylor Casey: The search for the 41 year old American woman in the Bahamas continues. The 41-year-old from Chicago was last seen June 19 on Paradise Island, the site of a yoga retreat she was attending. The Royal Bhamas Police Force has found traces of her since the search began, including scent trails traced by dogs, and a cell phone found in water. Thus far the phone has not yielded additional clues due to difficulty accessing the data. Casey’s family has asked the FBI to take over the search, expressing dissatisfaction with how local authorities have handled the search.

The event attracted over 100 attendees and included participation from several county officials in a panel discussion to discuss the preliminary release of numbers and information from WCA’s “2024 Community Snapshots.” This marked the 10th year that WCA published a biannual report, providing a statistical portrait of children and families by school district in Westchester County. The event provided a platform for county officials from Social Services, Community Mental Health, Health, Probation, and Workforce Development to share their visions and updates on how their departments aim to work toward a better future for Westchester’s children, youth and young adults.
