WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield firefighters responded Wednesday when a large tree on the 1300 block of East Broad Street fell, bringing down live wires that sent a surge of electricity into a house, which caused an electrical fire in the basement, Fire Chief Michael Duelks said.

Firefighters contained the fire using CO2 extinguishers, while requesting that PSE&G come to the scene, Duelks said.

“Upon arrival of PSE&G, the power was terminated to the structure and crews continued extinguishment while checking for fire extension. The structure was ventilated, removing all smoke and CO,” he said.

Afterward, the homeowner was able to return home, he said.
